INTERNATIONAL TRADING IN GARMENTS
Like most of other commodities, pattern of International Trading in garments has progressively changed over the last 3-4 decades. Not long ago, individual Exporters or Importers used to travel abroad to find buyers or sellers. Lack of proper understanding about each other often resulted in problems. However, as confidence developed, importers identified particular suppliers and vice versa confining dealings to each other. At this stage also an importer could not fully exploit the scope of buying available in a country except whatever his confederate could offer. Thus came the era of Buying Agents who provided all information, guidance and help to the importer in sourcing garments from their country. The nominal remuneration / commission paid to the Agent was found to be more than justified in view of the various benefits to the importers. Buying Agency is now widely accepted as a commercial prop to import activities.
CHALLENGE OF THE 21st CENTURY
The New Millennium, however, envisaging total Globalization and Liberalization in International Trade has now presented the conventional Buying Agents with a new challenge. Opening up of Global markets and phasing out of Restrictive Trade policies will bring about fierce competition in which only those will survive who can compete globally i.e., a supplier has not only to be the best in his own country but one who is internationally competitive; price wise and quality wise. A successful Buying Agent, therefore, will be one who can act globally, organize sourcing not only from his own country but also from wherever the importer benefits the most.
